TASTE OF THAI SELECT: Restaurant Thaïlande
Restaurant Thaïlande has a long history in Montreal and is probably one of the first Thai restaurants in Canada, dating back to the mid 1980s. Located at 88 Bernard Street West in the Mile End district it has a dedicated clientele and serves up traditional Thai favourites in a comfortable atmosphere that is equally great for relaxing or bringing a date.
The owner and his family bought the restaurant from the original owners in 1995 and have been running things in the same location ever since. They completed a major renovation in 2016 which completely transformed the place into a bright and upscale modern restaurant complete with a Thai-style seating area where you sit on the floor at low tables. (taking off your shoes is a must) And for special occasions there is a private party room which is available.
Tom Yum Soup
We started the meal with tom yum soup and were served both a vegetarian version as well as one with shrimp. This is a very traditional dish and the presentation here was perfect. The soup was light tasting and not too spicy or oily. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, and the mushrooms and fresh veggies made a perfect start to the meal
Red Beef Panang Curry
One of the most delicious dishes in the world is panang curry. This rich peanut-based sauce as the most rich and complex flavour of all Thai curries. This version was not too spicy and the beef was nicely cooked. The veggies were still crunchy which added a nice contrast from the tender beef.
Pad Markeua - Eggplant
This veggie dish with eggplant was sweet and a bit spicy and was served with so many hearty veggies it was hard to know where to start! Taken with rice on the side this was a very satisfying main course. The use of real Thai basil added a nice flavour that made this dish a definite hit for vegetarians.
Thai Hom Mali and Sticky Rice
Restaurant Thaïlande offers the choice of both Thai hom mali (Jasmine) rice or specially prepared sticky rice for your meal. The hom mali rice has a wonderful aroma and is a great choice for just about any dish. If you're looking for something a bit different, sticky rice, served in a unique little container offers a more chewy and hearty texture that can be dipped into the curry for a unique experience.
Mango Salad
We tried some mango salad which had a very good mixture of veggies and slices of mango. The sauce was sweet and not very spicy and the veggies were all crispy and refreshing. Either a great starter or a great way to break up a meal if you want to share multiple dishes with a friend.
Mango Sticky Rice
One of our favourite deserts is mango sticky rice. Served warm with coconut milk on top, this is a very rich and delicious desert which is great to share with a friend.
If you live or work in the Mile End area, or if you're just out for an evening stroll, then stop by Restaurant Thaïlande for a unique and delicious meal that will have you coming back for more!
